Was Colorblind, but now I See. Day 3: “Test me.”

Contemplative Prayer

Set an alarm for 5 minutes. Say,

Come, Holy Spirit.”

Open yourself up to what the Holy Spirit wants to speak to you today. May be open your hands like you are going to receive a gift.

Sit in silence until the timer goes off. During this time simply follow your breath in and out. Notice when your thoughts interrupt you, and without judgement return to your breath.

Read Scripture

Psalm 139: 1-12 & 23-24 NIV

You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you

Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

See Color

Look around your house and think about the media you are consuming. Write responses in a journal or discuss on social media with a friend the following questions:

1. What is the racial mix of people pictured in the photos and artwork in your home? In your friends, family, and colleagues’ homes?

2. What are the last five books you read? What is the racial mix of the authors?

3. What is the racial mix of the main characters in the last five shows you watched?

4. What about the last movie you saw? What about your favorite movie?

5. What podcasts are you listening to? What is the racial make-up of the hosts and the guests.?

Today start a book or a TV show with Black writers and/or main cast. I recommend a few favorites:

TV: Blackish, #BlackAF, Dear White People, Trevor Noah’s The Daily Social Distancing Show

Books: I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness, Becoming by Michelle Obama, Born a Crime By Trevor Noah.

Closing Prayer

We have been so blind to the significance of our choices to remain cloistered in our Whiteness.

Forgive us. Forgive me for turning down and turning off voices of color.

But you know. You have seen. You have heard the cries of the oppressed. Like you heard the cries of your people enslaved in Egypt so long ago.

Help us be a part of the people who tear down the systems of segregation that are still enslaving people today.

We say together with abolitionists from throughout history. “Let my people go.”
